Origin of life experiments were pretty common back in the 50's - kids, and even grown up ones in sophisticated laboratories, would mix together the elements considered essential to life on the planet and in some way subject the mixture to conditions likely to instigate life where there was none before. Like, for instance, an enormous electrical storm...

One experiment, half a century years later, is receiving attention posthumously, as young scientists exhume the experiments of predecessors.
